Dimitris Ioannou presents his new solo show entitled ‘Laying Dormant’ at a former storage space in the basement of an old office building located at the Historic Center of Athens.

This project deals with the collecting process and an object’s function as a carrier charged with subjective meaning, as a memory triggering mechanism.

The main part of the show consists of small obsolete collections of various objects. These collections have been created by the time the artist was ten years old until recently. The objects involved are not displayed in terms of traditional display modes but they are placed wrapped in cellophane wrapped creating an asphyxiating feeling.

In the second component of the show the artists operates once again as a collector, but this time he gathers images and especially stories of people (ages 7 to 77) that describe a irreplaceble, to them, object. In these cases objects are turned into vessels that are loaded with meaning that is purely subjective.

This body of work is a product of Ioannou’s research on the collecting process and the creation of narrative through it. It investigates the relationship of an object’s physicality, its tactile reality, with immaterial notions thereby challenging the traditional distinction between Object and Subject, material and immaterial.

Laying Dormant
πρώην αποθήκη, Αθήνα, 2016

Ο Δημήτρης Ιωάννου παρουσιάζει τη νέα του ατομική έκθεση με τίτλο ‘Laying Dormant’ («αφημένα ανενεργά») σε μια υπόγεια πρώην αποθήκη σε ένα κτήριο γραφείων στο Ιστορικό Κέντρο.

Το project αυτό πραγματεύεται τη διαδικασία της συλλογής και τη λειτουργία του αντικειμένου ως αποδέκτη υποκειμενικά φορτισμένων εννοιών, ως μηχανισμού μνήμης.

Το κύριο κομμάτι της έκθεσης αποτελείται από ανενεργές μικροσυλλογές, οι οποίες έχουν δημιουργηθεί από την εποχή που ο καλλιτέχνης ήταν 10 ετών έως πρόσφατα. Τα αντικείμενα δεν αναδεικνύονται με λογική επίδειξης σε προθήκες αλλά τοποθετούνται τυλιγμένα με διαφανείς μεμβράνες δημιουργώντας την αίσθηση της ασφυξίας.

Στο δεύτερο κομμάτι της έκθεσης ο καλλιτέχνης πάλι δρα ως συλλέκτης αλλά αυτή την φορά συγκεντρώνει εικόνες και κυρίως ιστορίες, ανθρώπων ηλικίας 7 έως 77 ετών που περιγράφουν ένα αναντικατάστατο για τους ίδιους αντικείμενο. Σε αυτές τις περιπτώσεις τα αντικείμενα μετατρέπονται σε δοχεία, φορείς νοήματος απόλυτα υποκειμενικού.

Αυτή η δουλειά αποτελεί τη συνέχεια της έρευνας του Ιωάννου πάνω στη διαδικασία του συλλέγειν και της δημιουργίας αφήγησης μέσω αυτής. Διερευνά την σχέση της υλικότητας ενός αντικειμένου ή μιας σειράς αντικειμένων με άυλες έννοιες, αμφισβητώντας τον καθαρό διαχωρισμό αντικειμένου και υποκειμένου, υλικού και άφθαρτου.
